Artist Statement

My artistic practice explores the relationship between people, place and culture. As a contemporary photographic artist, I am constantly exploring the relationship of photography with other art practices through ongoing studies. These explorations add new dimensions to my work and allow me to communicate my art more effectively, whether through the addition of paint, print, sculpture or recordings. Over ten years my practice has focused primarily on recording communities in contemporary inner- city Dublin. During this time, I have recorded communities affected and villages dispersed as social housing schemes are demolished and redevelopment occurs. As a fourth generation Dubliner my personal family history, along with my expansive interest in my city, is integral to my work and allows me to blend with the contemporary inner-city society. By using vibrant photographic images, I set out to portray these sometimes misunderstood and marginalized communities with dignity and to challenge the stereotype of inner-city communities. Exhibiting my work in both conventional and non-conventional venues has brought together diverse audiences from different backgrounds and fostered dialogue while exposing art to a non-art audience. This juxtaposition of the art in social housing demystifies the white box restrictive access of art. My vision in my current work is to continue to engage with and record the people and culture of the villages in the city as they are impacted by social change and to explore further how this impact affects other cultures. Through this I aim to engage and educate a diverse audience (geographically and culturally) about specific unique aspects of Dublin.
